Why a Community Advisory Board? Whose idea
was this, anyway? And what does it do?
One of the CAB's main functions is to solicit
listener feedback and suggestions and to provide information and
recommendations to the station's governing board (the Board of Directors)
based on what it receives.
But like wearing seatbelts, having a CAB is not just a good
idea, it's the law.
Radio stations that receive funding from the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting are required by law to create a Community Advisory Board. The
federal law establishing community advisory boards reads, in part:
"The board shall be permitted to review the
programming goals established by the station, the service provided by the
station, and the significant policy decisions rendered by
the station. The board may also be delegated any other responsibilities, as determined
by the governing body of the station. The board
shall advise the governing body of the station with respect to whether the
programming and other policies of such station are meeting the specialized
educational and cultural needs of the communities served by the station, and
may make such recommendations as it considers appropriate to meet
such needs."
The CPB, which establishes the regulations governing
stations like KXCI, offers this interpretation of the law's intent:
"The purpose of the advisory board is to
provide a vehicle for effective community input to the station's governing body
about station programming, community service and impact on the community
from the station's major policy decisions. Congress believed that the
establishment of community advisory boards would
assist the stations to develop programs and policies that address the specific
needs of the communities that they endeavor to serve."

Who's on the CAB?
The current members are Nick Van
Kleek (chair), Jill Bullock, John Crouch, Brian Flagg, Kali Holtschlag, Peggy
Hutchinson, Barbara Kuelbs, Ruben Moreno, Tony Novelli, and Todd Sadow
We are actively recruiting new members; representatives from minority
communities are particularly encouraged to apply.
How are the CAB members chosen?
CAB members are appointed by the station's board of
directors. If you'd like to serve on the CAB, you can submit your name below.
When and where does the CAB meet?
The meetings are usually on the first Tuesday of the month. Check here for the next meeting date and location.
How can I find out more?
Come to a meeting. If you can't make a
meeting, the minutes are posted here. Alternatively, the CAB has a
listserv (CLICK HERE), and some between-meeting
discussion of issues goes on there. (Note: this listserv is open to all
to read, but only CAB members can post at this time).
I have a burning issue. How can I provide
input to the CAB/KXCI?
You can come to a meeting and speak in person -- we reserve
time at the end of each meeting for a call to the audience, and if time permits
include audience comments in our discussion during the rest of the
meeting. You can also submit comments in writing via our web comment form
below. In addition, we will be hosting semi-annual town halls where the
listening audience at large can provide feedback on the station's current
operations and ideas for the future.
